I’m an actress first before all things in my career. So apart of my come up is the “starving actress” stereotype. With the writer’s strike going on in Los Angeles, jobs have been scarce and getting booked is even harder. Even when you get booked, it doesn’t mean you’re going to get paid an arm and a leg. Most jobs available don’t pay that much despite what people might think. So, there are a lot of highs and lows in the entertainment industry.
Last year, I took off in my acting career, starting the year off strong by booking the lead in a play that I adored. Next, I booked the lead in a movie where I played a part written specifically for me. Then from the momentum of these two bookings, I went on to finish the year strong. It’s 2023 now, and I have yet to work as an actress again. I have booked, but some jobs were too far for me to Uber since I don’t have a car and as we all know, taking an Uber is ridiculously expensive in general. Add that to me turning 32 in just a few months and you have a recipe for a career-led funk. Leaving me with that sinking feeling now in July, that my career has, once again, hit a plateau. The worst feeling as an actress.
In our professional journeys, it is common to encounter periods when our careers seem to hit a plateau. Despite our best efforts and hard work, we find ourselves stuck in a rut, feeling stagnant and unfulfilled. While a career plateau can be disheartening, it is essential to remember that it is a natural part of professional growth. Rather than feeling discouraged, this is an opportunity to reassess our goals, explore new possibilities, and regain momentum. In this blog, we will discuss strategies and practical tips for handling life when your career hits a plateau, enabling you to emerge stronger, more motivated, and ready to embark on a new phase of success.
- Reflect and Reevaluate:
The first step to navigating a career plateau is self-reflection and reevaluation. Take the time to assess your current situation, strengths, weaknesses, and long-term goals. Ask yourself important questions: Are you still passionate about your field? What aspects of your work bring you the most joy and fulfillment? Are there skills or knowledge gaps you need to address? This introspection will help you gain clarity and identify the areas in need of improvement or change.
- Seek Learning and Development Opportunities:
To break free from a career plateau, embrace continuous learning and development. Identify areas for growth and invest in acquiring new skills or enhancing existing ones. Attend workshops, conferences, or seminars, enroll in online courses, or pursue certifications relevant to your field. Not only will this help you stay current, but it will also expand your knowledge base and increase your marketability. Additionally, seek out mentorship or coaching opportunities to gain valuable insights from experienced professionals who can guide you towards new possibilities.
- Network and Expand Connections:
Networking plays a pivotal role in career advancement. When you find yourself at a plateau, it becomes even more crucial to broaden your professional network. Attend industry events, join relevant online communities, and engage with like-minded individuals. Seek out mentors, industry leaders, or colleagues who can offer guidance and support. Building strong relationships and connections can open doors to new opportunities and provide fresh perspectives on your career trajectory.
- Embrace Change and Take Risks:
To break free from a career plateau, you may need to step out of your comfort zone and embrace change. Consider exploring new roles within your organization, taking on challenging projects, or even exploring opportunities outside of your current workplace. Embracing change can invigorate your professional life, expose you to new experiences, and expand your skill set. Taking calculated risks is essential for personal and professional growth, and it can lead to exciting opportunities you may not have considered otherwise.
- Cultivate a Growth Mindset:
A growth mindset is crucial when facing a career plateau. Rather than seeing it as a setback, view it as an opportunity for growth and transformation. Understand that setbacks and challenges are part of the journey towards success. Focus on developing resilience, adaptability, and perseverance. Cultivate a positive attitude and embrace failures as learning experiences that propel you forward. Remember that every successful person has faced obstacles, and it is the ability to bounce back that sets them apart.
- Explore Alternative Avenues:
Sometimes a career plateau can be an indication that it’s time to explore alternative avenues. Consider pursuing a passion project or starting a side hustle related to your interests. This can provide a fresh perspective, a sense of fulfillment, and potentially open doors to new career paths. Additionally, volunteering or engaging in community activities can provide valuable experiences and expand your network while making a positive impact.
Experiencing a career plateau is a common phase in any professional’s life. Aforementioned, I’m there right now–eagerly hoping for a BIG BREAK! It is essential to approach this period with a positive mindset, self-reflection, and a willingness to embrace change. Use this time as an opportunity for growth, learning, and exploration. By reflecting on your goals, seeking new learning opportunities, expanding your network, embracing change, cultivating a growth mindset, and exploring alternative avenues, you can emerge from this plateau stronger, more motivated, and ready to embark on a new phase of your career journey. Remember, the journey to success is not always linear, and it is the ability to adapt and evolve that propels us towards new heights.
