Cream Soda Obsession

In high school, I dated a guy who created a lifelong obsession for me. My first block was Honors chorus. Second semester of freshman year, I was upgraded to choreographer so as a freshy, I definitely thought I was at the top of my game. My crush was a senior student and his way of courting me was to knock on my door before I began class, lead me into the hallway beside the office, give me a big kiss and leave me with a T-Mart chicken cheddar biscuit and blue cream soda. He was consistent and I was swooned. The funny thing is, he would always take a little swig of the blue cream soda so our kiss tasted sweet! It was probably one of the best kisses of my life. He’s in Heaven now but I’ll surely never forget him.

When I moved to California, I realized over time that cream soda wasn’t very popular here. It took me years to find niche restaurants and stores that carried it. Creme soda is a carbonated soft drink that has been enjoyed for many years around the world. It has a unique taste that is both sweet and creamy, making it a popular choice for those who love a little indulgence in their drinks. In this blog, we’ll explore the history, ingredients, and popularity of creme soda.

After moving to Sherman Oaks, I finally found a store called Lolli and Pops that carried all of my favorites! Frostie Blue Cream Soda, Harry Potter Butterscotch Beer, and Virgil’s Handcrafted Vanilla Cream soda. Absolutely delicious and a splurge I don’t mind. Creme soda is a popular drink worldwide and I enjoy it as a sweet treat or paired with meals. You can also use it in various cocktails and mocktails, and its sweet and creamy flavor makes it a popular ingredient in desserts such as ice cream floats and cakes.

The origins of creme soda are unclear, but it is believed to have been first created in the United States in the late 19th century. The first creme soda was made using vanilla syrup, carbonated water, and cream. Over time, the recipe has evolved, and today there are many variations of creme soda, including those made with natural flavors and without dairy products.

Creme soda typically contains carbonated water, sweeteners such as high-fructose corn syrup or sugar, and vanilla flavoring. Some brands also include additional flavorings such as caramel, orange, or cherry. Some variations of creme soda may contain cream or other dairy products, while others are dairy-free and vegan-friendly. While creme soda can be a delicious treat, it is important to note that many commercial brands contain high amounts of sugar and artificial ingredients. Excessive consumption of sugary drinks has been linked to various health issues, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. As such, it is important to consume creme soda in moderation or consider making a healthier homemade version.

If you love the taste of creme soda like me but want to avoid the unhealthy sugars and additives found in many commercial brands, here’s how you can make a healthy and delicious version at home:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup natural sweetener such as honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon citric acid
  • 2 cups sparkling water
  • Ice cubes

Instructions:

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the water and sweetener and heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sweetener has dissolved.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract, baking soda, and citric acid.
  3. Let the mixture cool completely.
  4. Fill a glass with ice cubes and pour in the sparkling water.
  5. Add the cooled creme soda mixture to the sparkling water and stir well.
  6. Enjoy your homemade healthy creme soda!

You can also experiment with different flavors by adding fruit juices or extracts to the mixture. And don’t be afraid to adjust the sweetness to your liking. With this recipe, you can enjoy the classic taste of creme soda without compromising your health.

In conclusion, creme soda has a long and storied history and continues to be a popular drink today. While it may not be the healthiest choice, it can be enjoyed in moderation as a sweet and indulgent treat.
