To Text, Or Not To Text

You ever have someone that you like and you have a text that sits in your reply box waiting to be sent? Or do you create a note on your phone with a whole message that you constantly reformulate, hoping to say the right thing but the words seem to jumble every time you read them? Do you constantly look at your phone waiting for them to reply to you and you want to double, triple, quadruple text them but the rules of the game just don’t apply? Me, too. So many times.

None of us want to come off as needy, desperate, intense, or impatient. The reality is, when you don’t give someone the space they need or the time to reply, that is how multiple messages comes off. Texting is very convenient but there is nothing like an actual phone call to listen to the person you’re speaking to so you can hear their tone, building a bond through voice-to-voice communication, and have more in-depth conversations.

Dating can be a complex and challenging experience, especially when it comes to navigating the unwritten rules of communication. The older you get, the more complex it seems. Yes, you know more about yourself, your standards change, and you definitely have a better head on your shoulders, but ultimately, finding the person who is on the same level and ready for what you are at the same time you are is one heck of a challenge. There are no right answers and to be honest, the rules are all made up.

With the rise of online dating and texting, there has been a surge in new dating behaviors, such as double texting and ghosting, which can make it even harder to understand how to communicate effectively.

Double texting is when you send two or more messages to someone who has not yet replied to your previous message. This behavior is often seen as taboo in the dating world. However, there are times when double texting may be acceptable, such as when the conversation has been ongoing, or if the message is urgent or time-sensitive. Ultimately, the decision to double text should be based on your intuition and the context of the situation.

Ghosting, on the other hand, is when someone abruptly ends communication with no explanation or warning. This behavior can be hurtful and confusing, leaving the other person feeling rejected and insecure. While there may be valid reasons for ending communication, such as safety concerns or a change in personal circumstances, it is important to communicate openly and honestly with the other person rather than simply disappearing.

In a new dating relationship, giving someone space can be important for building a healthy and sustainable connection. It is essential to respect the other person’s boundaries and give them the time and space they need to process their emotions and thoughts. Constantly bombarding them with messages or trying to force a connection can come across as overbearing and push them away. Taking a step back and giving them the opportunity to reach out on their own terms can lead to a more authentic and meaningful connection.

All in all, the dating world can be full of ambiguity and uncertainty. While there are no hard and fast rules, it is important to communicate openly and respectfully with others, whether that means double texting, ghosting, or giving someone space. By approaching dating with empathy, self-awareness, and a willingness to listen and understand, you can build stronger and healthier connections with others.
