The villain has entered the chat and its name is “Overthinking.” Like all villains, overthinking has a troubled past which causes it to kick into gear. Overthinking is a common issue that many people face. It occurs when we dwell on negative thoughts or analyze a situation to an excessive degree. While it may seem like overthinking can be beneficial, it can also have negative effects on our mental health and wellbeing.
Pros of Overthinking:
- It can help you solve problems: Overthinking can help you come up with creative solutions to complex problems.
- It can help you make better decisions: By analyzing a situation from multiple angles, you can make more informed decisions.
- It can improve your attention to detail: Overthinking can help you pay attention to the finer details, which can be beneficial in certain situations, such as when you’re working on a complex project.
Cons of Overthinking:
- It can cause anxiety: Overthinking can cause you to worry excessively, leading to anxiety and stress.
- It can lead to indecision: When you overthink a situation, you may become indecisive and struggle to make a decision.
- It can lead to negative self-talk: Overthinking can lead to negative self-talk, where you criticize and judge yourself harshly.
If you’re like me, then you’re an overthinker. I feel like it’s my superpower and kryptonite all in one. I find myself able to process and think deeply about matters and situations that others would get stumped over. However, when it comes to more personal matters, I create the most unwanted scenarios in my head and it leads me to creating false narratives that I never needed. Those false narratives end up making me doubt myself. Yet, that makes me my own worst enemy–hence, overthinking being the villain. Overthinking can take you out of the present moment and make it hard to enjoy what is in front of you. If you want something to work out, then believe that it will work out exactly the way it should. It will work out. Sometimes not the way you picture it but be ok with finding out. That is what makes life so magical and special.
How to Overcome Being a Chronic Overthinker:
- Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness is the practice of being present and focusing on the current moment. By practicing mindfulness, you can reduce your tendency to dwell on negative thoughts.
- Set aside time to think: Instead of overthinking throughout the day, set aside a specific time to reflect and analyze situations. This will help you avoid becoming overwhelmed by your thoughts.
- Challenge your thoughts: When negative thoughts arise, challenge them by questioning their validity. Ask yourself if they are based on facts or assumptions.
- Take action: Overthinking can lead to inaction, which can be detrimental to your wellbeing. Instead of analyzing a situation endlessly, take action and make a decision.
- Seek support: If you’re struggling with chronic overthinking, seek support from a therapist or counselor. They can help you develop coping strategies and work through any underlying issues.
In conclusion, overthinking can have both positive and negative effects. While it can help you solve problems and make better decisions, it can also lead to anxiety and negative self-talk. To overcome chronic overthinking, practice mindfulness, set aside time to think, challenge your thoughts, take action, and seek support when necessary. Remember to be present. I can never stress that enough. Be ok with being ok.
